So I wanted to give my house a modern look that accentuated on the natural look of wood.  Some people use sheets of 1/4 birch plywood or other kinds of sheets but then your left with seams that you need to cover up.  I wanted to avoid those seams because those seams remind me of a camper or a trailer.  The goal was to fool myself into thinking that I wasn't living in a trailer ;)  I ended up using 1/4 inch interior cedar siding for all but one wall, it looks amazing and smells even better.  First thing anyone says when they walk in is how good it smells, which is a huge complement because I look like Ive been riding the rails for the past two years.  My biggest wall I did something special to, I needed a nice accent and something to really set the interior off.  All and all the siding was a fun and fairly easy process and it didnt take as long as I expected it to take.

Instead of staining and covering up that wonderful cedar smell I used knotty pine siding.  It was much cheaper and didnt smell nearly as nice.  Simply separated the wood into three piles and went to town with three different colors of stain.  Ventilation is a good thing, if you don't like getting crazy high on stain fumes....  Love this wall, its going to be hard to hang any kind of art on it.

When installing cedar tongue and groove remember that its important to open and separate all the wood giving it time to dry and shrink into the shape it will stay.  I opened all the wood and let it sit with the heat turned up for about a week.  Either the heater I was using to warm the house wasnt enough or I didnt give the wood enough time to shrink, probably a combination of the two.  After the ceiling went up all the heat pocket up there and caused the wood to shrink just a little more.  I seem to be the only one that notices but just a heads up if youre working with the stuff.  Other than that it looks beautiful and Im happy enough with the end result.

Instead of putting siding in places I knew were going to be covered I skipped it and saved myself some time and money.  In place of the tongue and groove, I used 1/4 inch lauan plywood, it went up much faster and was cheaper.  Little things here and there to save the cheddar, and time.

The siding was easy on the mind, took a good deal of time but it was a very rewarding and fun process.  Much easier to use than the 3/4 stuff on the exterior.

..... Love it.  Get creative with your build, this will be your house.  This will be the place where you take something that was resting in your mind doing nothing, then using your hands to show the world whats going on inside your head.  Don't forget, HAVE FUN!
